The Great Emperor Ashoka and His Legacy in Bihar
Ashoka, also known as Ashoka the Great, was an Indian emperor of the Mauryan Empire, who ruled almost all of the Indian subcontinent from c. 268 to 232 BCE. The grandson of the founder of the Maurya Dynasty, Chandragupta Maurya, who was guided by the great strategist Chanakya, Ashoka promoted the spread of Buddhism across ancient Asia. His capital was at Pataliputra (modern-day Patna), the ruins of which can be explored at Kumhrar. The city's history is celebrated in the Pataliputra Mahotsav. His reign is particularly remembered for his conversion to Buddhism after the brutal Kalinga War. Filled with remorse over the massive loss of life, Ashoka renounced violence and dedicated his rule to the propagation of dharma. He erected numerous stupas and pillars, inscribed with his edicts, which are found throughout the subcontinent and are a testament to his efforts to spread peace and righteousness. Under Ashoka's patronage, Pataliputra hosted the Third Buddhist Council, a pivotal event that aimed to purify the Buddhist movement and codify its scriptures. His administration was highly organized, with a network of officials known as 'dharmamahamatras' appointed to spread his message of ethical conduct and ensure the welfare of his subjects. These efforts helped transform Buddhism from a local sect into a world religion. For more on this, see Legacy of Ahimsa in Bihar. The Ashoka Chakra, a 24-spoke wheel featured on many of his edicts, is now the centerpiece of the national flag of India, symbolizing the country's commitment to dharma and progress. Ashoka's legacy in Bihar and beyond is a powerful story of transformation and enlightened leadership. Many Mauryan artifacts from his time are housed in the Patna Museum and the modern Bihar Museum. His rock-cut caves at Barabar Caves and the iconic pillar at Lauriya Nandangarh are other marvels of his reign. His influence is also seen in the Pala Dynasty that followed.
