Patna University: A Century of Educational Excellence
Established on October 1, 1917, Patna University holds the distinction of being the first university in Bihar and the seventh oldest in the Indian subcontinent. Its creation was a landmark moment, fulfilling the long-standing demand for a center of higher learning in the region, a cause championed by visionaries like Sachchidananda Sinha. Located in the historic city of Patna, the university quickly became a beacon of knowledge in Eastern India.,In its early years, the university had a vast jurisdiction, serving as the examining and affiliating body for colleges across Bihar, Orissa, and even the kingdom of Nepal. It was during this golden era that it earned the moniker 'Oxford of the East' for its high academic standards and intellectual environment. Its constituent colleges, like the historic Patna College and the prestigious Science College, became cradles of excellence. The campus is near other landmarks like the Patna Museum.,The university was a hotbed of intellectual and political activity during the Indian independence movement. It produced a remarkable number of freedom fighters, leaders, and thinkers who would go on to shape the destiny of modern India. Its illustrious alumni include figures like 'Loknayak' Jayaprakash Narayan, 'Bihar Vibhuti' Anugrah Narayan Sinha, and the great poet Ramdhari Singh 'Dinkar'.,After the establishment of other universities, Patna University was reorganized as a residential-cum-teaching university in 1952. While it has faced challenges in recent decades, its legacy endures. It continues to be a premier institution in Bihar, carrying forward a century-old tradition of academic excellence and contributing to the intellectual life of the state, a legacy that harks back to the ancient universities of Nalanda and Vikramshila.
