Shravani Mela: The Holy Pilgrimage to Deoghar
The Shravani Mela is one of the most significant and longest religious fairs in India, held during the holy month of Shraavana. While the destination, Baidyanath Dham, is in Jharkhand, the pilgrimage's starting point and soul lie in Bihar. Millions of devotees, known as 'Kanwariyas', undertake an arduous journey of over 100 km on foot. This is a major event for the Bhagalpur region and one of the most important Festivals of Bihar.,The pilgrimage begins at Sultanganj in Bihar's Bhagalpur district, where the Ganges flows northwards, a feature considered highly auspicious. The Kanwariyas collect holy water from the river in small pots, which they carry on their shoulders using a decorated sling called a 'Kanwar'.,They walk barefoot, chanting 'Bol Bam', all the way to Deoghar to anoint the Shivalinga at the Baidyanath Temple. The entire route is transformed into a sea of saffron, with volunteers and local communities setting up camps to provide food, water, and medical aid to the pilgrims. The Shravani Mela is an unparalleled spectacle of faith, endurance, and community service, similar in devotional intensity to the Pitru Paksha Mela and the Maha Shivaratri celebrations.
