Pitru Paksha Mela in Gaya: A Journey of Ancestral Reverence
The Pitru Paksha Mela in Gaya is one of the most significant events for Hindus worldwide. It is a 15-lunar day period when Hindus pay homage to their ancestors (Pitrs), especially through food offerings. Performing these rites, known as 'Pindadaan', in Gaya is considered highly auspicious and is believed to bring salvation to the departed souls. This city is also famous for the story of Dashrath Manjhi and the Pretshila Hill.,During this fortnight, the city of Gaya transforms into a massive pilgrimage center. Devotees perform rituals at various sacred sites, including the Vishnupad Temple, which houses a footprint of Lord Vishnu, and along the banks of the Phalgu River.,The belief is that the souls of ancestors visit the earth during this period, and the offerings made by their descendants bring them peace and liberation. The mela is a profound expression of familial duty, remembrance, and spiritual faith that has been practiced for centuries. It is as important to Gaya as the Mahabodhi Temple is for Buddhists.
