Vivah Panchami: Celebrating the Divine Wedding of Ram and Sita
Vivah Panchami is a Hindu festival that celebrates the divine wedding of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita. It is observed with great enthusiasm in the Mithila region of Bihar, which is believed to be the birthplace of Sita. The festival falls on the fifth day of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon) in the Hindu month of Agrahayana. For more on Mithila's wedding traditions, see Chauthari. The birth of Lord Rama is celebrated as Ram Navami.,Temples in places like Sitamarhi and Darbhanga are beautifully decorated, and idols of Rama and Sita are adorned as a bride and groom. The entire wedding ceremony is re-enacted with elaborate rituals, including processions (baraat) that mimic the journey of Lord Rama to Janakpur for his wedding.,Devotees sing traditional wedding songs, and the atmosphere is filled with joy and devotion. The festival not only celebrates a key event from the epic Ramayana but also reinforces the cultural identity of the Mithila region and its deep connection to the story of Sita. The art of Kohbar is also central to these weddings.
