The Stone-Cutters of Patharkatti, Gaya
In the small village of Patharkatti near Gaya, a centuries-old tradition of stone carving is being kept alive by a community of skilled artisans. The name 'Patharkatti' itself means 'stone-cutters'. These artisans are descendants of the craftsmen who are believed to have built the magnificent temples of ancient Magadha.,Using simple tools like hammers and chisels, they transform blocks of granite and sandstone into intricate sculptures of deities, decorative items, and household objects like mortars and pestles. The skill is passed down from father to son, with children learning the craft from a young age by observing their elders.,The stone used is sourced from the nearby Patharkatti hills. The artisans' work can be seen in temples and homes across the region. Despite facing challenges from modern machinery and changing tastes, the stone-cutters of Patharkatti continue to chip away, preserving a precious artistic heritage that is an integral part of Bihar's cultural identity.
