Sonepur Mela: Asia's Largest Cattle Fair
The Sonepur Mela, held annually in the Saran district of Bihar, is a spectacle of epic proportions. Known as Asia's largest cattle fair, it attracts visitors, traders, and pilgrims from all over the subcontinent. The fair begins on the auspicious day of Kartik Purnima and continues for about a month. It is one of the most famous Festivals of Bihar.,Historically, the fair was a major center for the trade of elephants, horses, and other livestock, with its origins tracing back to the reign of Emperor Chandragupta Maurya. While the trade of elephants is now banned, the fair continues to be a hub for cattle, birds, and other animals. It's a place where ancient traditions of barter and trade are still alive.,Beyond the animal trade, Sonepur Mela has evolved into a massive cultural event. It features folk performances, theater shows like Nautanki, magic shows, and amusement park rides. Countless stalls sell everything from handicrafts and agricultural tools to modern electronics. The religious aspect is also significant, with pilgrims taking a holy dip at the confluence of the Ganges and Gandak rivers and offering prayers at the Hariharnath Temple.,A visit to Sonepur Cattle Fair is an immersion into the rustic heart of Bihar, a vibrant and chaotic place where commerce, culture, and spirituality converge on the banks of the river Gandak.
