Sikki Grass Craft: Weaving Golden Threads of Tradition
Sikki grass craft is a traditional art form from the Mithila region of Bihar, where the golden-hued Sikki grass is coiled and woven to create a variety of decorative and utilitarian objects. This eco-friendly craft, much like Madhubani Painting, has been passed down through generations, primarily by women. The region is also known for its unique headwear, the Paag, and is part of the larger Madhubani district.,The process begins with collecting the grass, which grows in the wet and marshy areas of northern Bihar. The grass is then dried, and the upper, flowery part is discarded. The remaining stalk is dyed in vibrant colors or used in its natural golden state. The artisans use a needle-like tool called a 'takua' to coil and stitch the grass into intricate shapes.,From boxes (pauti) and baskets to toys and coasters, Sikki grass products are known for their beauty, durability, and lightweight nature. This ancient craft is not just an art form but a symbol of the sustainable and creative spirit of rural Bihar, a spirit also seen in the region's Sujani Embroidery.
