The 'Gotra' System in Bihar: Tracing Ancestral Lineage
The Gotra system is a fundamental aspect of social organization among Hindus in Bihar, as it is across India. A 'Gotra' is a lineage, tracing descent in an unbroken male line from a common male ancestor, who is typically a revered ancient Vedic sage (Rishi). This system is crucial for understanding the social fabric of the People of Bihar.,The primary practical application of the Gotra system is in regulating marriage alliances. Marriages within the same Gotra ('sagotra' marriage) are strictly prohibited. This practice, known as exogamy, was designed to prevent inbreeding and ensure genetic diversity within the community.,In traditional matchmaking, particularly in communities like Maithil Brahmins, the Gotra of both the bride and the groom is one of the first things to be checked. Genealogists, known as 'Panjikars' in Mithila, maintain detailed records to verify these lineages, a process central to events like the Saurath Sabha.,While the rigidity of the Gotra system is being debated and challenged in modern times, it remains a significant part of the cultural and social identity for many in Bihar, connecting them to a distant, almost mythological, past and shaping their social relationships. It is a key consideration in Bihari Wedding Rituals.
