Although born in Uttar Pradesh, Swami Sahajanand Saraswati's work was centered in Bihar. He was a leading figure in the peasant movement, founding the Bihar Provincial Kisan Sabha and later the All India Kisan Sabha. He fought against the zamindari system and advocated for farmers' rights, becoming one of the most important peasant leaders in Indian history.
